Perhaps you have already had the desire to adapt your own car a little better to your individual needs, both technically and visually. Today, there are many ways to give your own car a little help, especially online. Which measures can be easily implemented?
Performance via laptop
When you think of tuning, you have in mind above all an increase in performance - and this is technically easier to implement today than was the case a few years ago. In order to give the engine some additional horsepower, sharper camshafts were installed, among other things, which changed the timing times. An adapted cylinder head and, in even earlier times, changes to the carburettor and air filter were necessary for comparatively low performance boosts. With a modern engine control system, on the other hand, tuning is primarily a question of software. For a manageable amount, the performance per laptop can be increased by 20 to 30 percent for most models.
Alloy rims and wide tyres enhance the vehicle's appearance
Changes are also comparatively easy to implement when it comes to the chassis: A set of shorter sports springs lowers the car a few centimeters and is already available for less than 200 euros; suitable dampers can also be found cheaply in the range of many online shops. In combination with alloy rims including wide tires, the look benefits enormously. Particularly large rims in 17" and 18" format are popular - and come into their own perfectly thanks to the lowering. When buying, it is particularly worthwhile to search the Internet, because the selection is particularly large here. The stationary trade usually reaches its limits here because too many rim designs cannot be exhibited at all. In addition, it makes it difficult to compare prices, so you can easily overpay. The combination of wide tires and the sports suspension is not only useful for visual reasons, the handling also benefits: The center of gravity is lower, the car sits more firmly on the road.
Spoilers and side skirts make tuning perfect
Of course, the tuning doesn't have to end at this point. Whether it's spoilers, side skirts or sports exhaust – everything that the manufacturer either doesn't supply from the factory or pays very well can also be found in the aftermarket trade. Spoilers increase the downforce on the road quite noticeably; contrary to what is often assumed, this is not purely optical tuning. A front sill can also reduce unfavourable air turbulence and thus reduce wind resistance and fuel consumption.
Increasingly popular: LED light design
The classic optical tuning has also been expanded by another component in recent years. In the past, changes in the area of lighting were usually limited to the installation of white turn signals or tinted taillights. Today, the focus is on lighting design. LEDs can be used to create all shapes and light patterns. In this way, the manufacturers achieve that their models can be recognized even at night by the rear lights and that the striking design language is continued. However, older models are by no means excluded from this: In terms of accessories, your own car can also be upgraded with interesting lights that match your own model exactly. The effort for installation is kept within limits, especially since there is usually no need for acceptance by the TÃœV or Dekra. Carrying a general operating permit (ABE) is completely sufficient for many accessories, and this can even be dispensed with for rear lights with a test mark – visual highlights can be surprisingly easily implemented on your own car.
